Medicine is constantly evolving, particularly in highly specialised fields such as rhinology — the area of ENT surgery focused on disorders of the nose and sinuses. Maintaining the highest standards of patient care requires ongoing collaboration, education, research, and professional leadership at both national and international level.

Mr Rohit Gohil, specialist nose and sinus surgeon in Edinburgh, has recently been appointed as the Scotland and Northern Ireland Representative on the Council of the British Rhinological Society (BRS). This is an important professional role within one of the UK’s leading organisations dedicated to advancing rhinology, sinus surgery, and nasal health.

The British Rhinological Society, which works under ENT UK - the professional membership body for ENT, is committed to promoting excellence in rhinology through education, research, training, and the development of high clinical standards across the UK. The society plays an important role in supporting ENT surgeons involved in: advanced sinus surgery; rhinoplasty and functional nasal surgery; nasal airway disorders; smell disorders; nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis; and endoscopic skull base surgery

For patients, appointments such as this may understandably seem distant from day-to-day clinical care. In reality, involvement in national specialist societies is closely linked to maintaining high standards within modern surgical practice.

Professional organisations such as the BRS help shape the future of rhinology by supporting research, developing educational meetings, improving training opportunities, and encouraging the sharing of expertise between surgeons across the UK and internationally. They also provide an important platform for discussing new technologies, evolving surgical techniques, patient safety, and evidence-based treatment approaches.

For Mr Gohil, this appointment reflects a longstanding commitment to education and professional development within not just rhinology, but also facial plastic surgery. Throughout his career, he has remained actively involved in surgical teaching, conference organisation, and advanced rhinoplasty education, including leading the Dundee Advanced Rhinoplasty Course and hosting national meetings focused on facial plastic surgery.

Remaining engaged with the wider rhinology community ensures continued exposure to the latest developments in:

  • Chronic sinusitis treatment

  • Advanced endoscopic sinus surgery

  • Functional nasal surgery

  • Septal perforation management

  • Smell disorders

  • Revision and complex nasal surgery

This ongoing collaboration and exchange of knowledge directly benefits patients treated in Edinburgh. Modern rhinology is increasingly specialised, and patients expect care that is safe, evidence-based, and aligned with current best practice. Participation in national societies helps ensure that surgical care continues to evolve alongside advances in technology, research, and understanding of nasal disease.

Importantly, the role also provides an opportunity to represent the perspectives and priorities of surgeons and patients across Scotland and Northern Ireland, helping strengthen collaboration between centres and support the continued development of rhinology services and education throughout the region.

Alongside his work within the British Rhinological Society, Mr Rohit Gohil continues to provide specialist care as a dedicated nose and sinus surgeon in Edinburgh, with expertise in:

  • Functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty

  • Septoplasty and nasal airway surgery

  • Advanced sinus surgery

  • Nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis

  • Septal perforation surgery

  • Revision nasal surgery

At the centre of this work remains a simple principle: the best patient care comes from combining surgical expertise with continuous learning, collaboration, and commitment to the highest professional standards.

Professional leadership roles within organisations such as the British Rhinological Society are an important part of that commitment — helping ensure patients continue to receive modern, thoughtful, and high-quality nose and sinus care both now and in the future.
